What are the courses available?

IABSE offers the Diploma across different specialized curricula. The first to be launched is Bridge Engineering, followed closely by Forensic Structural Engineering. Additionally, the IABSE Academy Board is developing programs on Assessment of Existing Structures and Earthquake Engineering.

More curricula are expected to be introduced in the coming years, expanding opportunities for engineers to enhance their expertise in structural engineering.

Diploma in Bridge Engineering

The first IABSE Diploma, Bridge Engineering, is nearing its launch. This is currently the Pilot Course with selected students from around the world that is currently underway and will be completed soon.

This diploma covers a comprehensive range of topics across the full spectrum of bridge engineering, from fundamental principles to advanced concepts. Key areas include:

  • Historical developments and evolution of bridge engineering
  • Concept design and aesthetics
  • Structural analysis, testing, and design
  • Construction methods across various bridge typologies

The lectures emphasize real-world applications, using practical examples and case studies while also providing essential theoretical background as a refresher for students.

The detailed program will be released soon.

What is IABSE Diploma?

The IABSE Diploma is an innovative e-learning course developed by the IABSE Academy Board. It is awarded to those who successfully complete the course requirements. Designed as “a bridge between university and practice,” this program provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in a specific field of structural engineering, equipping recipients with the skills needed to excel in their careers.

The diploma is intended for young engineers and graduate students, as well as practitioners who wish to deepen their expertise in structural engineering. All course activities are conducted virtually, with pre-recorded lessons allowing students to learn at their own pace. Live web meetings are limited to thesis tutoring and discussions, ensuring that participants can complete the program without disrupting their professional commitments.

Instructors, tutors, and thesis commission members are internationally recognized experts, many of whom have designed complex structures or played key roles in investigating major structural failures in recent years.

How is the course structured?

Each course consists of lectures and a thesis. All lectures are uploaded to the Academy platform, where participants can access them online. To progress through the course, students must pass a test after each lecture, which is in the form of a questionnaire.

The thesis is a comprehensive assignment that integrates the topics covered in the diploma. It should be a concise report, which may involve developing a specific topic, critically analyzing a case study, creating a simple conceptual design of a structural member, or applying different methodologies for the design or assessment of a member.

A tutor, assigned by the Curriculum Board (part of the IABSE Academy Board), will guide the student through the thesis process. Students’ achievements are evaluated based on their questionnaire scores and the quality of their thesis.

Who can register for the courses?

The IABSE Diploma is open to anyone interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of structural engineering. It is particularly valuable for engineers in the early stages of their careers and ambitious graduate students. Experienced engineers looking to expand their expertise in specific areas of structural engineering practice will also benefit from the program.

The registration fee varies based on the total duration of the diploma courses. Discounts are available for IABSE members and for residents of countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) below USD 10,000.

Learn new skills. Prove your potential.

The IABSE Academy Board is dedicated to expanding opportunities for young engineers to learn, grow, and make meaningful contributions to society. To support this goal, the Board has developed the IABSE Diploma, an innovative e-learning program designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice. The diploma offers specialized curricula in Bridge Engineering, Forensic Structural Engineering, Assessment of Existing Structures, and Earthquake Engineering, with a focus on reinforced concrete and unreinforced masonry structures.
